In 1953, Piedmont Publishing expanded into television with WSJS-TV channel 12, now known as WXII-TV. The station transitioned through classical and easy listening formats before WSJS-FM shifted toward country music programming in the early 1970s. The current call sign WTQR and the country format have since defined the station's identity across the Triad region.
