19:26 Spreker 3 And history back on this day in 1935, President Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act. It created unemployment insurance and pension plans for the elderly. On this date in 1936, the first basketball competition was held at the Olympic Games in Berlin, Germany. U.S. defeated Canada 19-8. Taking a look at this day in Alaska history. Back in 1906, the first official election was held to name a delegate in Congress for Alaska. Two delegates were elected, Frank Waski for a short term and then Thomas Cahill for a full term. 24:39 Spreker 2 You're listening to Statewide News from Alaska Public Media. I'm Ava White. Juneau residents in the glacial outburst flood zone celebrated Thursday afternoon as the Mendenhall River crested at a level well below initial predictions. The event was much less destructive than disastrous floods that struck over the past three years. KTOO's Alex Solomon has more. The flood crested at 14.7 feet on the Mendenhall Lake Gauge at 2.15 p.m. on Thursday, day according to the national weather service as floodwaters started to recede soon after only a handful of residents reported damage view drive residents saw the worst flooding as they have every year this is the second year in a row they were left without the protection of the flood wall constructed by the city and borough of juneau and the u.s army corps of engineers mandy malat lives at the end of the street she says she's celebrating as she and others who put up barriers on the street didn't see flooding in their homes this year the emotions that are
25:33 Spreker 4 are running through us are a big sense of relief and thankfulness to our friends and our neighbors that we got through the night and this gorgeous day together. Downstream on Meadow Lane, Bob
25:49 Spreker 2 Jacobson watched the flood from his son's deck and says he saw a tree strike the barriers across
25:53 Spreker 6 the river. You can see a log impaled in the HESCO barriers. That's pretty cool. It shoved it in and then it snapped off. It broke. So there are some damaged HESCO barriers down here, but it's held up really well. They will get fixed.
26:08 Spreker 2 Within minutes, Army Corps crews chainsawed the log away from the barrier. Jeff Garman is the meteorologist in charge at the Weather Service in Juneau, and he lives on Meander Way, a street that's been hit hard by flooding in the past. As the flood peaked, he had minor pooling in his backyard, which was piped back over the HESCO flood wall by pumps provided by the Army Corps. Garman says he's proud of how the city, tribe, local researchers, federal agencies, and countless others worked collaboratively to support residents in the
26:35 Spreker 3 flood zone. It's something Juneau should be proud of, that as a community we came together.
26:40 Spreker 2 By Thursday evening, residents in the evacuation zone were notified that it was safe to return home. With help from Clarice Larson and Corinne Smith in Juneau, I'm Alex Salmon. A wildland firefighter from the Northwest Arctic community of Norvig died Tuesday. Federal officials say 41-year-old Leslie R. Washington worked for a Houslia-based company called Scorched Earth Services. It was contracted to help fight a 30,000-acre fire on the Minnesota-Ontario border in the Superior National Forest. Washington and his team were in northern Minnesota when he died after an undisclosed medical emergency. Washington's wife told KOTZ News she remembers her husband as humble, kind, and devoted to his family. She said the loss is being felt throughout Norvig and across Alaska. Officials say more information will be released in the coming days. This is Alaska Public Media. The Alaska Morning News is brought to you in part by your local public radio station.
