The FM frequency was originally assigned in 1964 as a classical music outlet under WSJM-FM, reportedly one of the world's earliest fully automated radio stations. The automation system was designed by Brian Brown in 1963 and used telephone stepping relays to control reel-to-reel tape decks for unattended broadcast operation. The callsign was changed to WIRX in 1979 and remained dormant until 2008, when the WSJM identifier was reassigned to the 94.9 MHz frequency after the AM counterpart transitioned to an alternative rock format.
