The system originated with the U.S. Weather Bureau in 1960, which began experimental VHF marine weather broadcasts in Chicago and New York City. Weather radio receivers compatible with the network are sold through consumer electronics retailers, supermarkets, and drugstores across the United States, with particularly strong retail availability in the southern and midwestern regions prone to severe weather.
