Known as Villanova University Radio, this college station broadcasts at 100 watts on 89.1 FM, covering an eight-mile radius around the Villanova University campus in the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The format encompasses music, news, sports, public affairs, and specialty programming, and all full- and part-time Villanova students are eligible to join after completing training. Student radio at the university dates to 1947, when returning veterans built a closed-circuit AM carrier current transmitter; that facility was located in Dougherty Hall from 1955 onward and operated initially as WWVU before becoming WKVU 640 AM. Notable alumni of the carrier-current era include musicians Jim Croce and Don McLean. The station became known for sports coverage in the late 1970s and served as the exclusive radio home of Villanova basketball for a period, a relationship that extended into the team's Big East era beginning in 1980. The FM license on 89.1 was established in 1991. For a period, WXVU shared the 89.1 FM frequency with Cabrini College's station WYBF under a time-sharing arrangement, with WXVU broadcasting over the air four days per week. In 2022, a deal was reached under which WYBF surrendered its license and moved to online-only operation, allowing WXVU to broadcast full-time on the FM frequency.
