WHYY 90.9 FM

A public radio station licensed to serve Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, broadcasting at 90.9 MHz and operating under the on-air brand "91 FM." Its transmitter tower is located in the Roxborough section of the city, while studios and offices are situated on Independence Mall in Center City Philadelphia. The station is owned and operated by WHYY, Inc. WHYY-FM signed on December 14, 1954, as the first educational radio station in Philadelphia, owned by the Metropolitan Philadelphia Educational Radio and Television Corporation. Its original transmitter, located at 17th and Sansom Streets, was donated by Westinghouse Broadcasting. A sister television station, WHYY-TV on channel 35, was added in 1957. When WHYY-TV relocated from Philadelphia's channel 35 to Wilmington, Delaware's channel 12 in 1963, FCC regulations at the time required the radio station to adopt a different callsign to reflect the different market; it became WUHY-FM. The FCC removed this restriction in 1983, and the station reclaimed the WHYY-FM designation. The station became a charter member of NPR when the network launched in 1970, and was among the 90 founding stations that broadcast the inaugural edition of All Things Considered. It remains one of NPR's major contributing affiliates. Among its best-known productions is Fresh Air, a weekday interview program hosted by Terry Gross and Tanya Mosley that has become one of the most widely distributed programs in public radio, reaching approximately 650 NPR stations as well as international audiences in Europe via the World Service. The station also produces and distributes other public affairs and cultural programming. News coverage encompasses Philadelphia civic affairs, arts, education, health, and politics.
