It airs a classic country format with an emphasis on Texas country artists, and it carries play-by-play coverage of Granbury High School football. In keeping with the school's team nickname, the station brands itself as "Pirate 1420." The station first signed on in 1980 under the call letters KPAR. Financial difficulties led to a reduction to daytime-only operation in 1986. The current call sign KPIR was adopted in 2002, and the station subsequently returned to round-the-clock broadcasting.
