A listener-supported public radio station operated by Elizabeth City State University in northeastern North Carolina, broadcasting at 55,000 watts. The station first went on air on March 18, 1986, at 90.7 MHz with 10 kilowatts from the ECSU campus, making it the first public radio station in Northeastern North Carolina. It later moved to 89.9 MHz and expanded its transmitter power. The call letters stand for "Wonderful Radio Viking Style," referencing the university's Viking mascot. Programming spans NPR news, sports, gospel, jazz, and urban contemporary music, serving both the northeastern North Carolina region and the Hampton Roads area of Virginia. The station mentors students in the university's Department of Language, Literature and Communication, as well as community volunteers interested in broadcasting. A second HD channel, branded as Jazzy 89.9 HD2, offers a dedicated jazz format. ECSU also operates W18BB-D, a low-power digital television station available on local cable.
