Broadcasting at 102.5 FM with an effective radiated power of 86,000 watts, this commercial station operates a Top 40 Contemporary Hit Radio format and is licensed to Bay City, Michigan. It serves the Greater Tri-Cities area encompassing Saginaw and Midland as well as reaching markets as far west as Montcalm County, as far east as Lake Huron, northward to West Branch, and southward into Oakland County. The station is owned by Cumulus Media and maintains studios in Saginaw. It is classified as a Class B station, though it is grandfathered at a power level exceeding the current 50,000-watt Class B maximum. The station first signed on February 18, 1969 at 106.3 MHz as WSBM, originally licensed to Saginaw and owned by Booth American. The call letters changed to WIOG on October 1, 1975, and the format moved to album-oriented rock. By 1980 a Top 40 format had been adopted, and the station later branded itself as Hits 106. The 102.5 frequency was previously home to WNEM-FM, later known as WGER, which was an early pioneer of FM stereo broadcasting in Michigan and operated as one of the state's most successful beautiful music stations, posting number-one ratings among adults aged 25 to 54 in the Saginaw and Flint markets through the mid-1980s. WIOG eventually acquired the 102.5 frequency and consolidated operations under its current format.
