A non-commercial, listener-supported public radio station broadcasting at 88.9 FM, licensed to Richmond, Kentucky, and owned by Eastern Kentucky University. It holds the distinction of being a charter member of National Public Radio and operates as a Class C1 station with an effective radiated power of 50,000 watts. The transmitter is situated off Igo Road near Interstate 75, and the signal covers northern, central, and eastern Kentucky, including the Lexington metropolitan area. The station broadcasts a news, talk, and information format, carrying flagship NPR programs as well as regionally focused journalism. Its coverage extends to Kentucky legislative and political reporting, state economic developments including coal production figures, and local public affairs. The station participates in the Appalachia + Mid-South Newsroom collaborative for regional coverage of communities across the broader Appalachian region. To extend its geographic footprint, the station operates five full-power satellite stations and five low-power FM translator stations. In December 2024, the network added its tenth transmitter, WEKM 88.1 FM, serving Maysville, Kentucky. Together, these transmitters provide public radio service to nearly half of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, making the station one of the most far-reaching public radio operations in the state.
