WNSB is a non-commercial FM radio station operating at 91.1 MHz, licensed to Norfolk State University in Virginia. The station first signed on the air on February 22, 1980, broadcasting from the university's James Hugo Madison Hall with 1,000 watts of power and an initial schedule of five hours per day, largely instructional in nature. It was conceived by Dr. Wilbert D. Edgerton, the founding chair of the Department of Mass Communications and Journalism, alongside Dr. Georgia Ryder. Over the decades WNSB evolved from a limited instructional outlet into a full-service community station branded as Hot 91, serving both the Norfolk State University campus and the surrounding Hampton Roads metropolitan area. The station functions as a working laboratory for students pursuing degrees in mass communications, offering hands-on broadcasting experience in programming, production, and on-air presentation. Operational funding is drawn from a combination of corporate sponsorships, grants, state appropriations, and listener memberships. The station provides music programming alongside community news and public affairs content, including health and emergency updates for the region.
