The station's roots stretch back to the 1930s, when the FCC began licensing experimental high-frequency "Apex" stations as a way to expand the limited AM broadcast band. That early experimental license eventually evolved through decades of ownership and format changes into the modern public radio outlet heard today. Programming centers on an Adult Album Alternative music format, delivering more than 100 hours of music weekly alongside news and informational content sourced from National Public Radio, Public Radio International, American Public Media, and the BBC.
