KZEL 96.1 - KZEL-FM

A commercial classic rock format radio station licensed to Eugene, Oregon on 96.1 FM, founded in 1967 by lumberman George Zellner. Originally broadcasting as KWFS before Zellner changed the call letters to KZEL, the station evolved through various formats during its decades-long operation. The station gained attention in 2006 when program director Mark Raney locked himself in the control room for ten days protesting management's format change, ultimately preserving the rock format through listener support. After transitioning to adult album alternative with contemporary artists in the 2010s, the station returned to classic rock in 2018. Owned by Cumulus Media, the station's programming extends through multiple translator stations throughout the Eugene area.
