A radio outlet affiliated with the Hometown Radio Network in central Kentucky, part of a group that also includes WHBN (1420 AM) and WRNZ (105.1 FM), all operated by Hometown Broadcasting of Danville Inc. The group's transmitter and studio facilities are co-located on Shakertown Road north of Danville. The original WHIR station at 1230 AM signed on in 1947 under founders W.T. Isaac and David B. Highbaugh. It changed ownership in 1959 to a Lexington-based group, and by 1969 carried a Top 40 format alongside a newly launched companion FM outlet. In 1987, WHAS talent Wayne Perkey and WAKY alumnus Johnny Randolph acquired the stations; Hometown Broadcasters of Lancaster purchased the group in 1995. The 103.9 FM outlet carries a variety format with 24/7 programming aimed at central Kentucky audiences. The broader WHIR operation on AM blends locally produced content with national syndication, including The Sean Hannity Show and The Ramsey Show from Premiere Networks, as well as Kentucky Sports Radio from Lexington's WLAP. Local programming has included play-by-play coverage of Danville High School football and affiliations with the Motor Racing Network and Performance Racing Network for NASCAR events.
