A non-commercial educational radio station licensed to Columbus, Ohio, operating on 89.7 FM at an effective radiated power of 40,000 watts. Owned by Ohio State University, it is the flagship public radio news and information outlet for the Columbus metropolitan area, affiliated with NPR. The station's transmitter is located on West Dodridge Road near the Olentangy River, and it maintains multiple repeaters across Ohio. The station first signed on December 13, 1949, initially simulcasting its AM sister station. It broadcast an all-classical music format from 1980 until 2008, when it transitioned to a news and information format incorporating NPR news magazines during morning and afternoon drive times. Programs including Weekend Edition, Car Talk, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, and This American Life shifted to this station during that transition. A 24-hour classical music service continues on the station's HD-2 digital subchannel and online stream. The station was the first in Columbus to adopt HD Radio technology in April 2004 and the first in the United States to begin full-time multicast broadcasting when its HD-2 channel launched in October 2004. Content spans local and regional journalism alongside the full NPR national programming slate.
