An AM community radio station operating at 1370 kHz, the outlet signed on September 13, 1953, originally as a 500-watt daytimer under the ownership of Catamount Broadcasters, Inc., broadcasting a full-service middle-of-the-road music format. Power was increased to 1,000 watts during the 1970s, though nighttime operation remained restricted. The station's FM sister, initially 94.3 WHGC, was added in October 1978 and later adopted the WBTN-FM call sign in 1997. Vermont Public Radio acquired both stations in 1999 for $901,000, selling the AM outlet the following year; it was subsequently donated to Southern Vermont College in 2002 before passing to Shires Media Partnership in 2008. The FCC later granted limited nighttime authority at 85 watts. In May 2021, WBTN began simulcasting a classic rock format on the 96.5 FM frequency under the tagline "We Bring the Noise." The weekday schedule features locally produced talk and music programming, nationally syndicated news blocks, and community-hosted programs covering topics from local musicians to natural history and archival recordings.
