One of the automated transmitters in the NOAA Weather Radio All Hazards network, a nationwide system of VHF FM stations operated by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. The network broadcasts around the clock, transmitting weather information prepared by nearby National Weather Service offices directly to the public without the intermediary of commercial or public broadcasting infrastructure. Programming cycles include local and regional weather forecasts, synopsis reports, climate summaries, zone and coastal water forecasts, and hazardous weather outlooks. During severe weather events, the cycle is compressed to prioritize short-term forecasts, special weather statements, and tropical weather summaries. Beyond meteorological content, the network serves as a conduit for emergency alerts drawn from the Federal Communications Commission's Emergency Alert System, broadcasting national security statements, natural disaster information, environmental and public safety notices such as AMBER Alerts, civil emergency declarations, evacuation orders, and fire warnings. The system uses automated broadcast technology that allows individual segments to be updated continuously and recycled across transmitters with consistent formatting. The network traces its origins to 1960, when the U.S. Weather Bureau began experimental VHF weather broadcasts serving marine audiences in Chicago and New York. Expansion through the 1960s and early 1970s brought the service to coastal communities and eventually to the broader public. Dedicated weather radio receivers are widely available in retail electronics stores throughout the United States and Canada, with particularly strong market penetration in the southern and midwestern regions susceptible to severe weather, including the area broadly referred to as Tornado Alley.
