A National Public Radio member station owned by Wichita State University, with a history tracing back to April 26, 1949, when it launched as a 10-watt noncommercial FM broadcast. At inception it held the distinction of being the first noncommercial FM station in Kansas, the second FM station in the state overall, and the first 10-watt noncommercial FM station in the United States. The call letters derive from the initials of Municipal University of Wichita, the institution's former name. The station's transmitting power expanded significantly over the decades, from 10 watts in 1949 to 250 watts in 1962, 10,000 watts in 1970, and 100,000 watts in 1987. It became a charter NPR member in 1971 and added a Public Radio International affiliation in 1994 — PRI later merged with the Public Radio Exchange in 2018. The station also carries BBC World Service programming from American Public Media. Facilities moved from Blake Hall on East 17th Street, dedicated in 1981, to a location in the Old Town area of downtown Wichita in April 2016. Current news coverage encompasses Kansas state and regional affairs, education, health, politics, and sports.
