A non-commercial educational station owned and operated by John Carroll University, broadcasting at 88.7 MHz and serving Greater Cleveland. The station is managed under the Tim Russert Department of Communication, with studios located in the D.J. Lombardo Student Center on campus and a transmitter atop Grasselli Tower. WJCU began broadcasting in 1969 under the call sign WABU with a 10-watt signal at 88.9 MHz and adopted its current call sign in 1998. Power was increased to 2,500 watts by 2006. Weekday daytime programming features an adult alternative music format branded Heights, presented by students, while evenings and weekends carry block-programmed specialty shows covering eclectic music, talk, and spoken word content. Sunday programming includes locally produced ethnic and community shows representing Jewish, Lithuanian, Italian, Hungarian, Armenian, Chinese, and Latina communities. The station also broadcasts select John Carroll University Blue Streaks varsity football and basketball games. In February 2022 a marathon radio interview conducted at WJCU set a Guinness World Record for longest consecutive radio interview at 25 hours and 35 minutes. The station has earned recognition including the International Student Broadcasting Championship People's Choice designation and the College Media Association Pinnacle Award for Small College Audio Outlet of the Year.
