About KJZZ FM 91.5

This radio station specializes in Blues, Jazz, Community music.
Operating on 91.5 FM, this National Public Radio member station is owned by Rio Salado College and broadcasts from studios inside the C Building on the college's campus on West 14th Street in Tempe, Arizona. The station airs NPR programming alongside blues music, with jazz featured on its HD2 subchannel. It is a sister station to KBAQ, the area's main classical music station. The station signed on February 22, 1951, as KFCA, broadcasting from the campus of Phoenix College with 10 watts on 88.5 MHz, making it Phoenix's first FM radio station. It became part of the Maricopa County Community College District upon that district's formation in 1962, and moved to 91.5 MHz in 1966. In 1971 it joined NPR and received approval for a power increase to 100,000 watts with a new tower on South Mountain. Following the tower transition on August 24, 1972, the call letters changed to KMCR-FM, standing for "Maricopa County Radio." In 1985 the current call letters were adopted to reflect the jazz programming then featured. Ownership was subsequently transferred to Rio Salado College, consistent with that institution's mission as a "campus without walls." The station produces original programming including a weekly call-in talk show covering Arizona news, politics, and culture. Original productions have included a pilot program hosted by former CNN news anchor Aaron Brown.
