The station traces its origins to 1973, when it first signed on at 107.1 MHz with a 3,000-watt signal as the first FM outlet in Moore County. Its earliest programming blended top-40 music during morning drive time with easy listening through the remainder of the broadcast day. Around 1987 the frequency shifted to 106.9 MHz and the format moved toward a softer easy listening sound. In 1995 the station relocated to its current 102.5 FM dial position, occupying a frequency that had previously been held by WAHP, though the move entailed a significant power reduction from 50,000 to 6,000 watts. The present call letters and adult contemporary format were both adopted in 1999.
