Lush is one of more than thirty channels operated by SomaFM, an independent listener-supported internet radio service founded in San Francisco in 2000. SomaFM originated as a micropower station broadcasting at the Burning Man festival in 1999 before transitioning to a full-time internet operation. The service takes its name from both the South of Market neighborhood of San Francisco and the Aldous Huxley novel Brave New World. It operates without advertising, funded entirely through listener donations. SomaFM was among the broadcasters affected by the Digital Millennium Copyright Act royalty rulings of 2002, briefly ceasing operations before the passage of the Small Webcaster Settlement Act enabled it to resume. The Lush channel focuses on slow, melodic, and downbeat music blending shoegaze, ambient pop, and dreamy electronic textures, programmed by SomaFM's music directors in keeping with the network's hand-curated, algorithm-free approach.
