The station operates from downtown studios and uses a transmitter located on a mountain peak southwest of the city. The station's history traces to the mid-1960s when it began as an FM outlet. Through the late 20th century, it operated under various call letters and formats including adult contemporary, Top 40, and oldies. The station transitioned to its current alternative rock format in 1992 following a major format war at competing outlets in the market. The station acquired its current ownership in 1993 and has since changed hands twice. Since 1995, the station has sponsored an annual multi-day music festival featuring alternative and punk touring acts and regional performers. A technical facilities upgrade in 1996 increased the station's coverage area significantly. In 2014, current ownership relocated all operations to new downtown studios.
