The station has undergone several significant format changes over its history. It launched on September 12, 1996, with a Regional Mexican format as KBMB. In November 1997, it rebranded to carry an Urban Contemporary format as "103.5 The Bomb," under the moniker "Better Mo' Better Music." The station was originally owned by Diamond Broadcasting, which held the distinction of being Sacramento's second African American-owned and operated station. During its Urban Contemporary era, the station served Sacramento's hip-hop community while drawing its ratings primarily from a white female 18–34 demographic. Initial programming was affiliated with the ABC Radio "Touch" satellite-fed format. The station subsequently changed ownership and format multiple times before arriving at its current country format under Entravision Communications. It formerly broadcast using HD Radio technology but has since discontinued digital transmissions, as well as RDS title and artist PAD data. The transmitter operates without an HD Radio subchannel in its current configuration. Programming now focuses on established country artists and current developments within the country music genre.
