The station became the primary FM frequency for Northern California Public Media's public radio service in 2021, having spent its earlier years under commercial ownership. The station signed on in March 1986 as KRPQ, branded as "Q105" with a country music format established by a four-person partnership. Over the following decades it passed through several ownership changes and format shifts. Maverick Media acquired it in 2006 and moved hot adult contemporary programming onto the frequency; it later settled into a standard adult contemporary sound before Lawrence Amaturo's Sonoma Media Group took control. As a public broadcaster, the station carries NPR news and talk programming alongside locally produced content. Music programming spans adult album alternative, jazz, blues, and world music. Much of its schedule runs simultaneously on 91.1 FM, which serves as a sister frequency originally established as the home of the region's public radio service.
