Its studios occupy a historic building in downtown Rhinelander that previously housed the local newspaper, while the transmitter is sited between Sugar Camp and Three Lakes, Wisconsin, southwest of Thunder Lake. The station operates a satellite outlet, WXPW at 91.9 FM in Wausau, in a share-time arrangement with WLBL-FM, the Wausau service of Wisconsin Public Radio's Ideas Network. WXPW broadcasts from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. Monday through Thursday and from 6 p.m. Friday through 5 p.m. Sunday. WXPR's founding vision was developed by Peter Nordgren, whose background included noncommercial radio at the University of Wisconsin-Superior. The station was among fourteen serving underserved areas that received expansion grants from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting in the early 1980s. Local coverage includes outdoors programming, health, arts and culture, and regional news, with a particular focus on northern Wisconsin community affairs.
