It is owned by Ruben's Productions, Inc. The station was established in 1963 and has operated continuously since, serving the Spanish-speaking community in the Champaign-Urbana metropolitan region. The WKJR call sign was assigned by the Federal Communications Commission on September 29, 2006. The same call letters were previously used by a now-defunct AM station at 1520 kHz in Muskegon Heights, Michigan, though the two stations share no operational connection.
