The station is owned by St. Thomas Seminary in Bloomfield, Connecticut, an institution of the Archdiocese of Hartford, which has operated the station since its founding. The call letters stand for Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, reflecting the station's Catholic identity. The station signed on December 24, 1976, claiming the distinction of being the first archdiocesan-operated radio station in the United States. The initiative originated with Archbishop John F. Whealon, who envisioned broadcasting as a means of extending the reach of the Gospel through music and religious programming. Studios were initially located in Glastonbury, Connecticut, before moving to Bloomfield in the early 1980s, and later to Prospect, Connecticut in 2009. The transmitter tower is situated atop Johnnycake Mountain in Burlington, Connecticut, with an effective radiated power of 2,300 watts. A 2018 tower upgrade raised the antenna to 1,430 feet above average terrain, extending coverage across most of Central Connecticut into parts of Western Massachusetts. Additional FM translators on 107.1 in New Haven and 93.1 in Hamden extend the signal further, and the programming is also carried on a digital subchannel of WSHU-FM in Fairfield. Daytime programming features soft adult contemporary music and soft oldies, hosted by local disc jockeys. Evening and Sunday schedules include classical music, adult standards, and Catholic talk and teaching programming.
