A noncommercial radio station licensed to Palm Springs, California, operating on 1450 AM and serving the Coachella Valley. The station is owned by College of the Desert, a community college based in Palm Desert. Programming was also simulcast on translator station K260DE at 99.9 FM in Palm Desert. The transmitter and broadcast tower are located between Palm Springs and Cathedral City on Dinah Shore Drive, at a height of 52 meters (171 feet). The 1450 AM frequency has a long history in the Coachella Valley, beginning broadcasts in 1954 under the call sign KPAL. The call letters changed to KPSI in 1971, followed by a middle-of-the-road format in the 1970s and a shift to talk programming by 1983. In 1997, the call sign became KGAM and the station adopted an adult standards format before returning to news-talk, airing syndicated programs from hosts including Michael Savage, G. Gordon Liddy, and Dave Ramsey, alongside CNN Headline News and sports from the Los Angeles Lakers, Angels, and Oakland Raiders. In February 2010, the station adopted a progressive talk format as KPTR, a format transferred from 1340 AM. R&R Communications donated the station to College of the Desert in November 2016. After a period of silence for the transition to noncommercial status, the station returned to the air on May 27, 2017 under the KCOD call letters, which were assigned in January 2017. College of the Desert had previously operated a separate KCOD station since 2011.
