WOKB AM 1680

A commercial AM radio station licensed to Winter Garden, Florida, operating on 1680 kHz as part of the expanded band allocation established by the Federal Communications Commission in the late 1990s. The station is owned by Shanti Persaud through licensee Unity Broadcasting LLC and broadcasts an urban gospel format featuring a blend of traditional and contemporary gospel music, Christian talk programming, and ministry content. The station traces its origins to the FCC's 1997 announcement authorizing 88 stations to migrate to newly available expanded band frequencies between 1610 and 1700 kHz. WOKB in Winter Garden was authorized to move from 1600 kHz to 1680 kHz as part of this initiative. A construction permit was issued under the temporary call sign WTIR in April 1999. The station went through several call sign changes — becoming WLAA on May 9, 2003 — before the original WOKB designation was reassigned to the expanded band frequency in May 2008 following a swap between the paired 1600 and 1680 AM licenses. Daytime transmission power is 10,000 watts, reduced to 1,000 watts at night to prevent interference with co-channel stations. The station uses a non-directional antenna at all times. Describing itself as the only station of its kind serving the Orlando metropolitan area, WOKB combines gospel music with local call-in community programming, teen-focused content, and national ministry broadcasts. The station maintains active community engagement through partnerships with local churches, back-to-school drives, food and wellness events, Thanksgiving food giveaways, and Christmas toy drives, positioning itself as an established community institution in Central Florida.
