The station produces more than 150 distinct weekly programs, each conceived and hosted by volunteer student and community members. Programming is governed by a democratically elected station board, which selects which shows air. The format is freeform and eclectic, encompassing new and classic pop, punk, folk, classical, blues, R&B, metal, hip-hop, jazz, and electronic music alongside public affairs content, radio dramas, talk programs, and independently syndicated news including Democracy Now!. The station's origins date to 1949, when Oberlin College students established an AM broadcast operation called KOCN, the Oberlin College Student Network, with its first broadcast on November 5, 1950, at 590 AM. Early equipment was largely built by students. The call letters changed from KOCN to WOBC in the early 1950s to comply with updated federal call-letter standards, and the station subsequently transitioned to the FM band at 91.5 MHz.
