A non-commercial FM station operated jointly by the students and faculty advisers of Glenbrook South High School in Glenview and Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, Illinois. The station serves Chicago's North Shore communities with popular music, local news, and high school sports coverage, and has broadcast continuously 24 hours per day since August 2004, when it also began streaming online. The frequency was originally occupied by WMWA, a station owned by the Midwestern Academy, a Christian day school. Glenbrook South introduced radio courses in 1981 and began purchasing evening airtime on WMWA in 1982. In 1996, the school district purchased the station outright and requested the callsign change to WGBK. The station was founded and developed by educator Dell Kennedy, who retired from teaching after establishing the program. Since the summer of 2004, management has been led by Dan Oswald, a former student from the 1988–1992 era. WGBK offers a structured broadcasting curriculum spanning multiple levels, with students eligible to earn honors credit through courses in introductory and advanced radio and podcasting. The station received second place in the John Drury High School Radio Awards in 2004 and has accumulated subsequent recognition for excellence in student broadcasting.
