This radio station offers diverse programming.
Operavore is a streaming-only digital channel operated by New York Public Radio under the WQXR brand, dedicated entirely to opera music. It launched as a complement to the main WQXR-FM service at 105.9 FM, which is licensed to Newark, New Jersey, and serves the North Jersey and New York City area as a non-commercial classical radio station. WQXR-FM itself carries a substantial history. Its predecessor was a commercial AM station associated with The New York Times, long known as "the radio station of The New York Times." New York Public Radio acquired the WQXR-FM branding on July 14, 2009, through a three-way transaction involving The New York Times Company and Univision Radio, converting the signal to a non-commercial frequency. The station is owned by New York Public Radio, which also operates WNYC AM, WNYC-FM, and the New Jersey Public Radio group of four stations. Studios are located in the Hudson Square neighborhood of lower Manhattan, with transmitter facilities at the Empire State Building. The signal is extended by translator W279AJ at 103.7 FM in Highland, New York, and simulcast on WNYC-FM's 93.9 FM HD2 subchannel. WQXW, 90.3 FM in Ossining, carries programming for northern and central Westchester County. An additional HD2 subchannel carries New Sounds Radio, which focuses on classical works by living composers.
