WABC at 770 kHz is one of the oldest radio stations in the United States, having begun broadcasting in October 1921 under the call sign WJZ in Newark, New Jersey. Operating at 50,000 watts on a non-directional clear channel signal, the station can be received at night across much of the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada. It holds a primary role in the Emergency Alert System for the New York metropolitan area and New Jersey. The station is the flagship of Red Apple Media, owned by John Catsimatidis, and carries a conservative talk radio format marketed as Talkradio 77. Studios are located in Midtown Manhattan, with the transmitter sited in Lodi, New Jersey. WABC simulcasts on WLIR-FM on eastern Long Island. From 1960 to 1982, the station broadcast a Top 40 music format and was among the most widely heard radio stations in North America, serving as an influential model for contemporary hit radio programming nationwide. From 1943 to 2007, it functioned as the flagship station for the original ABC Radio Network and its predecessor, the Blue Network.
