The station is owned by Dick Broadcasting, which acquired it in December 2017. The station has cycled through numerous formats since its early years as a Top 40 outlet. It operated as "Whistle 92.3" in the early 1990s, then as "All Hit 92.3" from 1995 to 2000, followed by hip-hop, rhythmic CHR as "The Beat of Carolina," rhythmic adult contemporary as "The Party Station," and urban adult contemporary with the ABC Radio Networks-supplied "The Touch" format beginning in 2007. In August 2013 the station briefly aired a 1960s-leaning classic hits stunt before pairing with WQZL as "Jack FM" the following day. In December 2013 the simulcast pair switched to country under the brand "The Wolf." In July 2018 the stations shifted to variety hits as "The River." As of 2026, WQSL is in the process of separating from its WQZL simulcast partnership, with a planned signal increase to 100,000 watts to extend coverage toward the Greenville and Wilmington markets.
