A non-commercial public radio station broadcasting at 91.1 FM in Nashville, Tennessee, operating an adult album alternative (AAA) format under the brand Nashville's Music Experience. The station is owned by Nashville Public Radio, the same licensee that operates NPR member station WPLN-FM 90.3, with both outlets sharing studios on Mainstream Drive north of downtown Nashville. The station broadcasts with an effective radiated power of 10,000 watts from a transmitter off Knob Road, sharing a tower with WSMV-TV. The 91.1 FM frequency was previously occupied from 1971 until June 2011 by Vanderbilt University's WRVU, a college radio station. The university sold the frequency despite public opposition, citing declining student participation and the goal of establishing an endowment fund. Nashville Public Radio acquired the license for $3.35 million, with FCC approval granted in March 2014 and the transaction completed in May 2014. Initially the frequency carried classical music. In August 2020, Nashville Public Radio announced plans to relocate classical programming to an HD subchannel of WPLN-FM and relaunch the station with a local music format. The station rebranded to WNXP in October 2020, and the new AAA programming launched on November 30, 2020. The station holds periodic on-air fundraising campaigns and produces original content including live in-studio sessions, a Nashville Artist of the Month series, and the Music Citizens podcast. Programming supports emerging and established local artists alongside alternative and independent national acts.
