It briefly used the call sign KORM in late 1950 before adopting KORN—a name chosen to capitalize on its association with the city's famous Corn Palace attraction, after those call letters became available from a Fremont, Nebraska station that had rebranded. A notable figure in the station's history is Gary Owens, the celebrated radio announcer and comedian known for his role on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, who began his radio career at the station in 1952, serving as News Director.
