The transmitter is located in Shoreview, Minnesota, with studios in the Como district of Northeast Minneapolis. Cumulus also operates KQRS-FM in the same market. The station traces its history to October 1960, when it signed on as WAYL with a beautiful music format, initially on 96.1 FM before relocating to 93.7 FM. In 1969, Entertainment Communications (later Entercom) acquired the station. The beautiful music format continued through the late 1980s, with WAYL maintaining high ratings despite aging demographics. In July 1988, the station transitioned to classic hits as KLXK. In January 1992, the station relaunched as hard rock outlet KRXX, branded as 93X. A co-owned AM sister station simulcast the format for a period. Subsequent ownership changes and format refinements followed through the mid-1990s before the station settled into its current active rock identity as KXXR. The station brands itself around rock concert promotion and morning drive programming, featuring the Half-Assed Morning Show on weekday mornings. Concert events promoted by the station include large-scale shows at Target Center in Minneapolis.
