A non-commercial public radio station owned and operated by the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, with the broadcast license held by the Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System. The station operates as a unit of the UW-Milwaukee College of Letters and Science, with its studios and offices on the seventh floor of Chase Tower on Wisconsin Avenue in downtown Milwaukee. It is a Class B FM station broadcasting with an effective radiated power of 13,500 watts, with its transmitter situated atop the WITI TV Tower in Shorewood. As an NPR member station, the programming schedule includes nationally distributed programs such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Fresh Air, 1A, On Point, Marketplace, and Here and Now, produced by National Public Radio, Public Radio International, and American Public Media. The BBC World Service is carried overnight. The station is the largest NPR member in Wisconsin that does not belong to the statewide Wisconsin Public Radio network. A signature locally produced program is Lake Effect, an hour-long weekday show featuring local interviews and call-ins, broadcast at noon and repeated most evenings. The station also carries weekend music programming. For many years it aired a weekly adult album alternative program hosted by longtime Milwaukee radio personality Bob Reitman, titled It's Alright Ma, It's Only Music, until Reitman's retirement in April 2024. The station signed on the air on September 24, 1964, originally functioning as a training ground for broadcasting students at UW-Milwaukee. Following a major realignment of Wisconsin Public Radio's programming in May 2024, the station became the sole outlet for NPR news and talk content in the Milwaukee market.
