An AM radio station serving the Acadiana region of south-central Louisiana, operating at 1330 kHz and owned by Delta Media Corporation, with studios on the Evangeline Thruway in Carencro and a transmitter in west Lafayette. It holds the distinction of being the first radio station to sign on in the Lafayette market, launching on May 18, 1935, under a license obtained by the Evangeline Broadcasting Company, with original studios inside the Evangeline Hotel on Jefferson Street in downtown Lafayette. From its earliest years, the station broadcast live music by local artists alongside news programming. It covered major historical events including the outbreak of World War II and carried President Franklin D. Roosevelt's address to the nation following the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941. Throughout the war years, the station promoted local participation in war-bond drives, relief efforts, and civil defense announcements. In 1944, KVOL joined the NBC Radio Network as a primary affiliate. During the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, the station operated as a Top 40 outlet for the Lafayette area and gained regional prominence in part through the work of Paul Thibeaux, the first Black disc jockey employed in the local market, whose influence helped drive KVOL to the top of area ratings. The 1950s also saw the station produce and distribute a "Household Hints" pamphlet as a promotional vehicle for local listeners. In 1986, the station briefly changed its call letters to KRKR before reverting to KVOL in 1989. Today it serves the Acadiana community with local news and entertainment content, including event coverage, community announcements, and regional lifestyle programming.
