The station first went on the air on July 21, 1969, founded with a team that included manager Harold Welter, a veteran of LaPorte-area radio, along with disc jockey Ted Hayes, engineer Bob Densmore, and a news staff. In its early decades the station served as a general-interest broadcaster for the rural communities of Starke County and surrounding areas. Kankakee Valley Broadcasting also operates sister FM station WKVI-FM at 99.3 MHz, which shifted to an oldies format branded "Vinyl Gold" in September 2022, focusing on music from 1964 to 1975. A third property, MAX 98.3 FM (WYMR), licensed to Culver, Indiana, was built by the company in 2014 as a Class A FM facility operating at 6,000 watts, covering music from the 1970s and 1980s. In November 2014, WKVI-FM received the Spectrum Award as Station of the Year in Market 3 from the Indiana Broadcasters Association, recognizing the company's commitment to local radio service across the region.
