The station is owned by MediaOne Radio Group. WKZA signed on in late November 2000, initially launching with a stunt format of all-Christmas music before formally adopting a KISS-FM hit radio identity. The call letters were taken from a now-defunct AM station that had operated in nearby Kane, Pennsylvania. For its first 23 years, the station maintained a top-40 orientation, at times leaning toward hot adult contemporary and competing with sister station WWSE. MediaOne Group, which already owned WWSE, acquired WKZA from Cross Country Communications in October 2018, restructuring its portfolio so each station held a distinct format: WKZA as a pure top-40 outlet, WWSE continuing with hot adult contemporary, and soft adult contemporary content moving to WJTN. On July 1, 2023, programming from sister station WKSN—branded as "Kissin' Oldies"—shifted to WKZA, converting the station to its current oldies format.
