A non-commercial college FM radio station licensed to Hope College in Holland, Michigan, with one of the longest operating histories among campus radio stations in the region. The station's origins date to 1956, when two students — Richard Brockmeier and Jack Hellriegel — transmitted a signal through the electrical wiring of Kollen Hall dormitory using a carrier current system. Regular programming began in 1957 under the call letters WTAS, originally standing for "We're The Arkie Station" in reference to the Arcadian Fraternity. The name was later reinterpreted as "THE ANCHOR STATION," a reference to Hope College's institutional symbol. For more than 25 years, the station operated from basement studios in Kollen Hall. In 1981, WTAS began simulcasting on 103.3 FM through a local cable television service operated by Continental Cablevision. The transition to full FM broadcasting was initiated in 1979 by a student engineering project, leading eventually to the station's current identity as WTHS-FM at 89.9 MHz. The current call letters are derived from the college's name, replacing the original WTAS designation as the station expanded beyond its carrier current origins into full-power FM broadcasting serving the Holland and Zeeland communities.
