Studio facilities and offices are situated in downtown Greensboro alongside sister station WKRR, while the transmitter is located near Stokesdale. The station's origins trace to 1958 when it operated as WYFS, becoming the first Winston-Salem outlet to program classical music alongside religious content and modern jazz. After a format shift in 1966 to soul music under the call letters WAAA-FM, the outlet was sold to Golden Circle Broadcasting Corp. in 1971 and subsequently adopted the WSGH call letters during the early 1970s while carrying an easy listening format. Stereo broadcasts began in January 1975 alongside the adoption of the WKZL call letters. In 1976, the station relocated to a taller tower and doubled its transmitter power to 100,000 watts. During the mid-1970s, the station experimented with an eclectic blend of pop, rock, and progressive rock, with selections chosen by on-air hosts.
