The station is owned and operated by Midwest Communications, a Wausau-based broadcasting company, and forms part of an eight-station cluster in the Green Bay market. The station's origins date to August 13, 1947, when it signed on as WJPG-FM under ownership of the Green Bay Press-Gazette. The Norbertine Order of Priests subsequently acquired the frequency and operated it as WBAY-FM with easy-listening and middle-of-the-road programming for many years. Midwest Communications purchased the station in the mid-1970s as part of an acquisition that included WBAY-AM, and on September 1, 1975, the new call letters WIXX were assigned alongside the contemporary format that defined the station's modern era.
