The station traces its origins to June 19, 1957, when it signed on as KSTR under Mountain States Broadcasting Company with 5,000 watts daytime-only on 620 kHz. Over the following decades the frequency changed hands and call letters numerous times — including KKTK, KKGM, KBZS, KKGJ, KRDY, and others — before settling on the KJOL call sign in April 2001. A brief period beginning in March 1999 saw the station affiliate with the Radio Disney children's network.
