A student-run, non-commercial educational radio station broadcasting at 1,500 watts on 91.3 FM from The College of New Jersey, formerly known as Trenton State College, in Ewing Township. The station serves Mercer County, New Jersey, and neighboring Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Its call letters originally stood for "Trenton State Radio." WTSR received FCC authorization in June 1966 to broadcast at 89.7 FM with 10 watts of power, first going on air on October 26, 1966 from studios in Armstrong Hall, following a dedication ceremony led by college president Dr. Virgil W. Gillenwater. The station moved to Kendall Hall in March 1968. On November 1, 1974, WTSR shifted to 91.3 FM after the FCC granted a power increase to 1,500 watts, extending the broadcast radius to approximately 30 miles and reaching a potential audience of 750,000 to 800,000 listeners. The station later relocated into new facilities within Kendall Hall at the start of the 1993–94 academic year. In 2011, the Trenton Thunder, then the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, named WTSR the flagship station of the Trenton Thunder Radio Network, broadcasting all Eastern League regular season and playoff games until a new arrangement with WNJE took effect in 2017. The station produces a recurring live performance series called WTSR Underground, presented once per semester in collaboration with Lions Television. Past performers have included Turnover, Citizen, and Tiny Moving Parts. Programming encompasses alternative and indie music, over 20 specialty music genres, hourly news updates, and college and local sports coverage, all broadcast 24 hours a day.
