A non-commercial public radio station licensed to Emory, Virginia, owned and operated by Emory and Henry University. It serves the Abingdon and Marion area of southwest Virginia, and through an arrangement with Roanoke-based WVTF, simulcasts Radio IQ programming that includes BBC World Service news, NPR's Morning Edition, All Things Considered, and the public affairs program 1A. The station also produces and airs local music and public affairs programming during afternoon and evening hours. As of November 2022, its full local program lineup is additionally simulcast on WISE-FM in Wise, Virginia, which is operated by the Virginia Tech Foundation. The connection to Emory and Henry dates to 1929, when the university operated an early 100-watt AM station on 1370 kHz—the first Virginia station outside Richmond and Norfolk. Financial pressures during the Great Depression led to its sale in 1932, and the current WEHC, legally distinct from that earlier operation, was founded in 1992. A significant infrastructure expansion completed in October 2009, funded in part through federal assistance, replaced the station's original tower with a 199-foot structure and raised transmitter power from 500 watts to approximately 8,700 watts, substantially extending the station's coverage across the region.
