The station broadcasts a mix of national and international programming sourced from NPR, BBC World Service, and Public Radio International, supplemented by locally produced news content created by its own staff. WDDE traces its origins to 2010, when a group of longtime Delaware journalists — many previously employed at WHYY in Philadelphia before that station reduced its Delaware coverage — founded Delaware First Media and launched DFM News, an online news outlet. The opportunity to establish an FM presence came when a construction permit for a noncommercial Dover station, originally awarded to Salisbury University's WSCL in 2007 but left unused, was about to expire. Delaware First Media acquired the permit and built out what became the state's flagship public radio service.
