Owned by Crawford Broadcasting, the station operates under the brand name The Light and carries a Contemporary Christian music format. During late mornings and evenings, the schedule shifts to Christian talk and teaching programs. The station operates at an effective radiated power of 50,000 watts, with studios and transmitter located on Capitol Avenue near Burt Road in the Weatherby section of Detroit. WMUZ-FM transmits in HD Radio and simulcasts religious sister stations WCHB and WRDT on its second and third digital subchannels respectively. The station signed on November 11, 1958, originally licensed at 110,000 watts before the FCC established 50,000 watts as the maximum for the Detroit market. Crawford Broadcasting has maintained ownership throughout the station's history. The founding general manager was Dr. Al Black, with Percy Crawford serving as company president. After Percy Crawford's death, his son Donald assumed leadership. In its earlier decades, WMUZ-FM carried brokered Christian radio programs along with weekend ethnic-language programming in Polish, Romanian, Arabic, and German. On August 24, 2017, Crawford Broadcasting acquired a Detroit AM station at 1200 kHz and transferred the WMUZ call sign to that outlet, requiring the FM side to adopt the WMUZ-FM suffix. As Christian talk and teaching content migrated to the new AM station, the FM increased its hours dedicated to Contemporary Christian music. The station's HD-2 subchannel previously carried Christian Alternative Rock and Holy Hip Hop programming under the name Z-2 before that subchannel was discontinued.
